Autism Friendly Garforth

I have always wanted to make our local community more autism aware, to help our local shops and businesses understand how autism can impact families and how small/free changes can make ‘going out and about’ so much easier for autistic people and their families.

With thanks to Groundwork and Tesco Garforth in the Community who funded us though the Bags for Help Scheme,  The Main Deal, Garforth for helping us to spread the word  & Cielo Coffee for hosting, we got the training off the ground!
The training has been a massive success, with some great feedback received.

The Station House Cafe & Bistro has even booked some further training to make sure their entire staff are autism aware.

We’ve trained cafe’s, hairdressers, vets; charity shops, a uniform shop , a butchers shop; childminders, scout leaders and a rugby club, and so many more besides!

Tesco at Garforth & Selby are also working towards implementing autism friendly shopping – watch this space for more news at at later date.

The full list of  groups and business who have received training are below.

Many of you will have come across the Sunflower Scheme for hidden disabilities. All the business who have received the training are now aware of this scheme, they may be wearing a sunflower pin badge or ribbon to indicate they are available to ask for help or adjustments.  Staff will also be on the lookout for people who have a sunflower lanyard – if you already have one from an airport, please do use it while you are out and about in Garforth too!

For example, if you need a private room with no background noise to be able to eat out, the Station House can help. Firth Butchers are more than happy to take telephone orders and bring it to you outside if you don’t like the smell in the shop. SPT Uniforms might be able to offer you a quiet session to try on school uniform with your child, every single person who attended was happy to make adjustments – please do just ask them.
